Physical Axe Craft: Recombine Three Strong Prefixes

Turn Alt-rolled physical axe donors into a usable weapon: choose ilvl 83 bases, build two-prefix intermediates, recombine and finish the suffixes.

In this guide
Goal
Three strong natural physical prefixes and a usable attack-speed suffix
Base
Matching ilvl 83+ Despot Axes or Vaal Axes, chosen for your build
Method
Single-prefix donors → complementary two-prefix pairs → triple-prefix attempt
In the app
Alt/Aug donor batches; Regal-only conversion when a separate step needs it
Checkpoint
Sort each result by prefix families; never reset a valuable intermediate
Guide coverage
A sourced recombination sequence and practical finishes, without portable odds

This sequence follows the approach PhazePlays published for endgame weapons: collect natural physical prefixes, make two-prefix intermediates, then combine complementary pairs. The creator's own Reddit thread also explains why a cheaper two-prefix weapon can be a sensible endpoint.

This guide expands donor preparation into a sequence you can follow through to a usable axe. The target can be three T1 prefixes, but T2 keepers are a budget choice. Recombination can lose good mods; no attempt counts or prices are promised here.

Pick a weapon base you want to keep

Use ilvl 83+: that unlocks the top natural percentage-physical and hybrid physical/accuracy prefixes, while the top flat-physical and attack-speed tiers are already available. Modifier data confirms these cutoffs. This physical goal does not require an ilvl 86 base.

A Despot Axe offers faster base attacks; a Vaal Axe offers a different damage/speed balance and is the example in the original guide. Compare Despot and Vaal in your build. Use the same suitable base type on both inputs so either selected output base remains useful. A slow base is not automatically better just because its damage per hit is larger.

For the uncomplicated recipe, use ordinary uninfluenced, unfractured, non-synthesised bases. Don't mix in essence-only, veiled or Breach modifiers and assume the same recombinator behaviour.

The hybrid mod's two stat lines belong to one prefix. It can coexist with the plain percentage prefix; two tiers of the plain percentage family cannot supply two independent prefixes.

In Exiled Bench, use Items → Two Hand Axe → Magic → On my cursor → Stash, Alt + Aug, and Item level → 83+. In Mod DB, select T1 entries for the three families and Stop when → Any one. The app's tier selection means that tier or better; choose T2 explicitly if that is your acceptable minimum. Set weapon size 2 × 3, your count and an affordable Safety limit. Calibrate the tab, Arm, right-click the Alteration stack without Shift and start.

Keep each hit magic and sort it by A/B/C. A random suffix does not mean the desired prefix failed. The preparation article explains batch setup and optional Augmentation; never set all three prefixes as an All target on a magic item.

If a separate recipe step needs to make an already-approved magic donor rare, the app can apply Regal automatically with From my stash → Regal to Rare → Add Exalts, Max exalts 0, Annuls 0, pre-Regal Augmentation off. Ordinary Regals add a random mod, so they are not part of this minimal donor sequence: extra prefixes can pollute the pool.

Build the prefix ladder manually

Use Kingsmarch's Unpredictable Recombination mode for this community sequence. Butsicles' research distinguishes it from the selectable Predictable method and warns against copying old exclusive-mod filler strategies. It supports adding a simple low-tier opposite-side craft to reduce displayed costs; compare the actual gold/dust quote before accepting. An optional cheap suffix is not a guaranteed-odds trick.

  1. Combine A + B, seeking an A/B two-prefix item.
  2. Combine A + C, seeking an A/C item.
  3. Combine A/B + A/C, seeking A/B/C. Both inputs share the flat-physical family and together contain all three desired families. The shared family cannot appear twice on the finished item.

Other complementary two-prefix pairs can also supply all three families. Do not combine two A/B items and expect the missing C family to be created. Inspect actual mods and tiers before each click, including unwanted natural prefixes on either input.

After every recombination, classify the output: a good single prefix returns to its donor pile; two compatible desired prefixes return to the intermediate pile; three meet the prefix goal. A failed final attempt may still be useful material. Recombination consumes the input items and may lose targets; the app does not pick pairs or operate Kingsmarch.

Older 3.25 community guides are useful historical background. This sequence instead uses the creator's later weapon example and post-3.26 research. Treat historical probability charts as historical: matching the broad sequence does not verify old percentages under today's rules.

Finish at a sensible power level

Three desired prefixes, open suffix: if you have no conflicting attack-speed mod, bench-craft attack speed and use the weapon. That is already a complete practical endpoint. If an unwanted attack-speed tier occupies its family, a bench craft cannot replace it.

To clear unwanted suffixes, you need an open suffix for Prefixes Cannot Be Changed. Craft that lock, then Scour. The lock is a suffix and disappears with the other suffixes, while the protected prefixes remain. Only do this after checking the lock is actually present. With three occupied prefixes and no suffixes, you can craft attack speed, or use multimod plus two compatible suffix crafts if you have the unlocks and budget.

For a natural attack-speed attempt, craft Prefixes Cannot Be Changed, then Harvest reforge Speed on this ordinary axe. You retain the prefix investment, but the tier is random and other suffixes can fill. Inspect after each reforge. Reapply the consumed lock for another attempt only if a suffix is open. Full suffixes are a recovery checkpoint, not permission to ordinary-Scour or blindly Annul: an unprotected Annul can remove a physical prefix. Metacrafting explains what each operation respects.

Two desired prefixes: flat + hybrid leaves room for a bench percentage-physical prefix. With suitable open suffix space, multimod can add that missing prefix and attack speed. This is the lower-budget endpoint discussed in the creator's thread; it is not a triple-T1 item. Check existing crafted mods and slots first.

Set quality, socket/link requirements and numerical rolls for the final weapon. Avoid adding influence or a destructive finishing loop unless you have chosen a separate recipe for it. No fixed physical-DPS total follows from the prefix names alone.
