Choose a Crafting Base: Item Level, Donors and Finished Gear

A donor that can roll one mod is not automatically a good endgame base. Choose item level, defence type, implicit and fracture for the complete craft.

A low-level Hunter boot can roll Tailwind and still be the wrong base for boots you intend to finish with top movement speed. Choose the whole item before spending currency on its first modifier.

Donor or retained base?

For an Awakener's Orb donor that will be destroyed, buy an inexpensive item of the correct class and influence, at the level needed for the transferred mod. Its base defences and ordinary implicit do not justify paying for a premium wearable base.

The second item survives: its base type, item level, sockets and links are retained. Buy it for the full finishing plan. See Awakener's Orb data and the influence guide.

Recombinator donors are different: an input base can become the output and base-specific modifiers matter. For straightforward donor preparation, use matching suitable bases; inspect the output before continuing. Do not apply the disposable Awakener-donor rule to every recombination.

Practical item-level starting points

These concern naturally rolled explicit mods, not crafted, essence-only, unveiled or elevated replacements. The modifier list shows levels and spawn restrictions; an entry with zero weight is not a normally rollable target.

  • Wearable boots: ilvl 86+ for natural 35% movement speed. Tailwind's 75 minimum only establishes eligibility for that mod.
  • ES or evasion/ES body armour: ilvl 86+ for the top percentage defence prefix. Body-armour T1 suppression also requires 86 and an eligible evasion base.
  • Gloves: ilvl 85 often suffices, including natural T1 suppression on eligible evasion bases. Check the other planned affixes. Boots' natural T1 suppression also unlocks at 85; the 35% movement-speed plan is what pushes those boots to 86.
  • Physical two-handed axes: ilvl 83 supports natural T1 flat physical, increased physical and hybrid physical/accuracy prefixes plus T1 attack speed. A different influence or finishing target can need more.
  • Natural +2-arrow bows: ilvl 86+. One extra arrow or gem levels are different targets; see the arrow entries.

Item level differs from required character level. “Requires Level 84” on a high-tier armour base does not establish its crafting ilvl. Nor does ilvl 86 make every T1 mod available on every item class.

Pick the defence base and implicit for the build

For pure ES body armour, consider Twilight Regalia; for evasion/ES, Necrotic Armour. Compare cheaper alternatives and attribute requirements before investing. Pure ES Warlock Gloves are not a natural suppression base: that goal needs an eligible evasion base.

Two-Toned Boots suit builds needing their elemental resistance implicit. They are not universally best for ES or evasion. If using Eldritch implicits, account for replacing the ordinary implicit instead of paying extra for resistances you will overwrite.

For axes, compare speed and damage in the intended build: Despot Axe is one candidate; the Vaal Axe example is another. The highest affix tier alone does not select the best base.

What practical reports teach

In this wrong-base ES craft, the crafter hit strong defence rolls but regretted using Vaal Regalia instead of Twilight. Good mods do not erase the base's defence difference. The Twilight crafting report also chooses base, quality and fracture before Dense fossils; its elaborate finishing is not a beginner budget.

The wand discussion compares fractured-base Alt and fossil routes and corrects an imprint suggestion: fractured items cannot use the ordinary magic-item imprint. Read corrections as well as the first recipe.

Before starting Exiled Bench

Write down the retained base, wanted tiers, fracture and finishing method. Check the actual item's level and influence, select the corresponding Mod DB targets and set a Safety limit. A selected minimum tier is a stopping condition; it cannot make an incompatible item eligible. Keep donor batches separate from bases you intend to finish.
