PoE Imprints and Elevated Mods: The Craicic Croaker + Orb of Dominance Method
Which beast makes an imprint in 3.29, what an imprint can and can't save, how the Orb of Dominance elevates influenced mods, and the imprint loop that turns elevation into a repeatable craft.
In this guide
Two crafting tools show up in almost every elevated-item guide: the imprint and the Orb of Dominance. On their own they're simple. Together they turn one of the most expensive gambles in Path of Exile into a loop you can repeat until it works.
Choose the base before paying for imprints
If this item will be worn or retained in a merge, choose its endgame base and full finishing tiers before Alt rolling. Generally use 86 for retained boots with natural 35% movement speed and for body armour chasing top natural percentage defence. A donor that will be destroyed only needs the target influence tier. Base selection explains the difference.
The Tailwind community craft prepares and elevates influences separately before merging. Do not replace that starting item with a fractured bargain: the magic-item imprint recipe excludes fractured items. Check the intended normal tier, available prefix/suffix slots and imprint eligibility before buying beasts.
What an imprint is
An imprint is a save point for an item. You make one from an item, keep modifying the item, and if the result is bad you restore the item back to exactly how it was when you imprinted it.
The beast: imprints come from Bestiary beastcrafting. In 3.29 the beast is called the Craicic Croaker; it was the Craicic Chimeral before that. It's the same beast with the same craft, just renamed. Capture one while mapping with the Bestiary mechanic, or buy one on trade.
The rules:
- The Craicic Croaker magic-item recipe needs a magic, non-fractured item.
- Restoration consumes the imprint; make a new one before the next attempt.
- 3.29 also has a separate rare-Talisman imprint recipe. That exception does not let you imprint ordinary rare boots or body armour.
Choose the Bestiary tool for the checkpoint
- Craicic Croaker imprint: a restore point made before the ordinary item becomes rare. Keep it for a failed Regal or elevation attempt.
- Wild Bristle Matron: a crafted metamod. Full suffixes plus an open prefix can force the suffix lock; check craft limits and eligibility. It is not an imprint or protection against every operation.
- Craicic Croaker + The Black Mórrigan: applies the magic-item Hinekora's Lock effect, listed in current recipe data. It previews a currency result; it does not restore a bad result. The Tailwind merge guide shows where that optional checkpoint fits.
Compare today's beast costs with rerolling the starting mod and buying a prepared donor. Repeated attempts consume real materials even when the original magic item can be restored.
What an Orb of Dominance does
The Orb of Dominance (called Maven's Orb before 3.17) works on rare influenced body armour, boots, gloves and helmets with at least two influenced modifiers. It removes one influenced modifier and upgrades another.
An upgrade reaches the elevated version only if the selected modifier is already at its highest normally rollable tier. A lower-tier modifier advances one tier instead. It does not add influence.
With exactly two influenced modifiers, the chance that your target is selected for the upgrade is 50/50. Check the item after a Regal: if it added a third influenced mod, that simple coin-flip calculation no longer applies. The Awakener's Orb is a different tool, used to combine influences.
The imprint loop
- Roll eligible magic armour with two influenced mods, one prefix and one suffix. The mod you want elevated must be at its highest normal tier.
- Make an imprint of this magic item before making it rare.
- Regal and inspect every influenced modifier. Exactly two are needed for the simple 50/50 case.
- Apply an Orb of Dominance. If the target is removed, use the imprint to restore the magic item, then make a new imprint before retrying. Restoration consumes the imprint.
- Finish a successful item with bench crafts or metacrafting.
Budget for bad streaks: a 50/50 chance does not promise success within two tries. If the second influenced mod must be added after the magic stage, imprint first and restore any unusable result.
Where Exiled Bench comes in
Step 1 is where the hours go. Landing a specific influence mod, and often a second influenced mod alongside it, is Alteration + Augmentation spam on a magic item. That's exactly what the app automates:
- On the Items page, set Roll mode to Magic, On my cursor and Alt + Aug, with Augment → Until a hit to preserve a one-mod hit.
- In Target mods, filter the Mod DB by item type, base and influence. For two influenced mods, set Stop when to One of each: your key mod in the first list, the acceptable second influenced mods in the second. The run only stops when both are on the item.
- Run it on Stash to prepare several magic bases at once. That's useful if you want spares on top of your imprints.
Regal itself can be automated after making the imprint: a separate Single → Magic → From my stash setup on the approved magic item, with After the target → Add Exalts, Max exalts 0, Annuls 0 and Augment → Off. Check the preview and inspect the rare result before Dominance. Use this on the prepared magic item; an Alt recipe on a rare can normalise it with Scour.
Imprinting, restoration, Dominance and bench choices remain separate checkpoints. Avoid the repeatable-base Bonus mod restart loop on a valuable item. See the multi-currency setup, Tailwind and explode.
Tips
- Imprint before the Regal. Once the item is rare, you can't make an imprint of it.
- Check the elevated version first. Look the mod up in a tool like Craft of Exile and make sure the elevated tier is worth the orbs.
- Keep the second mod cheap. The second influenced mod exists to be sacrificed, so pick whichever lands most easily.
