How to Roll Tailwind Boots with Alteration + Augmentation
A step-by-step guide to hitting Tailwind on magic boots using the Alteration + Augmentation method — and how to automate the whole thing so you never miscount an orb again.
Tailwind is one of the most sought-after boot enchants-in-a-mod in Path of Exile: a flat action-speed multiplier that benefits almost every build. But it only appears on influenced boots, and rolling for it by hand is the definition of tedium — you can burn hundreds of Alteration Orbs before it shows up.
This guide covers the classic Alteration + Augmentation method for landing Tailwind on a magic base, then shows how to hand the clicking off to Exiled Bench so you can target it precisely and walk away.
What you need
- A Redeemer-influenced boot base (Tailwind is a Redeemer suffix).
- A stack of Orbs of Alteration and a few Orbs of Augmentation.
- The base at magic rarity (use a Transmutation if it's white).
Why Alteration + Augmentation
A magic item can hold at most one prefix and one suffix. The Alt + Aug method works like this:
- Alteration re-rolls the magic item's mods completely.
- You check whether the mod you want (a suffix, in Tailwind's case) rolled.
- If it rolled alone, an Augmentation adds a second random mod — handy if you also want a prefix like movement speed, without wasting Alts once the hard part is done.
The key insight: Tailwind is the rare, hard-to-hit part. Everything else is filler. So you Alt until Tailwind appears, then optionally Aug to fill the empty affix.
Doing it by hand
Alt → Ctrl+C → read the mods → not Tailwind? → Alt again → repeat forever.
The problem isn't the strategy, it's the execution. Reading item text after every single orb, hundreds of times, is where people make mistakes — they roll past the mod, misread a tier, or simply give up.
Automating it with Exiled Bench
This is exactly the loop Exiled Bench was built for. Here's the setup:
- Calibrate your item slot once (click the two corners so the app knows where the boots are).
- Open the Mod DB, filter to Boots → your base → Redeemer influence, and select Tailwind. The app generates a tier-exact regex for you — no typing patterns by hand.
- Choose the Alteration + Augmentation method. Turn on skip-Aug-on-hit if you only care about the suffix, or leave it on to auto-fill a prefix.
- Press your start hotkey, switch to PoE, and let it run.
Exiled Bench spams Alterations, reads each result from the clipboard, and stops the instant Tailwind appears — then applies the Augmentation if you asked it to. Because it uses randomised timing and a small click jitter, it doesn't tick like a metronome.
Tips
- Set a safety limit. Cap the run at, say, 800 alterations so a bad base doesn't drain your whole stack.
- Use a forbidden mod if a particular suffix keeps blocking the slot you want.
- Batch it. Got a stash tab of bases? Use grid mode and roll them all in one sweep.
Once Tailwind lands you'll usually want to move to a Regal and beyond — but that first, painful step is now completely hands-free.
