Crafting an Explode Chest: The Alt-Spam Guide

The "Enemies you Kill have a chance to Explode" body-armour mod (often just called explode chest) is one of the best clear-speed layers in the game. Corpses detonate for a slice of their life, chaining packs apart. It's a Crusader prefix, and like most influence mods, getting it on a good base is a grind.

This guide walks through the standard alt-spam approach and how to make it painless.

The plan

Explode is a prefix, so the workflow mirrors any other "alt for the hard mod first" craft:

1. Start with a Crusader-influenced chest at magic rarity.
2. Alteration spam until the explode mod appears.
3. Augment if it rolled alone and you want a second magic mod.
4. Regal, then finish with your preferred method (bench craft, harvest, or multimod).

The explode mod has several rolled ranges — the top tier is (21–30)% chance. If you want to guarantee a high roll, target the tier explicitly instead of accepting any explode roll.

Targeting the exact tier

Accepting any explode roll wastes currency later when you re-roll a low one. In Exiled Bench you select the mod from the Mod DB and pick the tier you want; it builds a regex that matches only that tier's value range. A low roll won't trip the stop condition — the app keeps going until you hit the range you asked for.

This is the difference between "stop when the word explode appears" and "stop when I have a keepable explode chest." Tier-exact matching saves you a second grind.

Automating the alt-spam

1. Calibrate the item slot (two corner clicks).
2. Mod DB → Body Armour → your base → Crusader, select Enemies you Kill … Explode at the tier you want.
3. Method: Alteration (add Augmentation if you want to fill the second affix).
4. Optionally add a forbidden mod — e.g. force a re-roll if a specific unwanted prefix appears that would block explode.
5. Start, alt-tab to PoE, done.

Batching a stash tab of bases

Buying a stack of cheap Crusader chests and rolling them all is often cheaper per-explode than grinding one base forever. Drop them into a stash tab, calibrate the grid once, and run a stash sweep — Exiled Bench visits each item, rolls it to target, marks it done, and moves on. Come back to a tab of finished bases.

After the hit

Once explode lands you'll typically Regal and then either multimod with a crafting bench or send it through Harvest to add life/resistances. The painful part — finding explode in the first place — is the part worth automating, and now it's hands-free.
