Fossil Crafting Explained: Targeted Rolling with Resonators

Fossils are one of the most powerful crafting methods in Path of Exile because they bias the mod pool. Instead of praying to raw RNG, you load fossils into a resonator and each one adds, removes, or reweights whole categories of mods. It's the closest thing the game has to targeted currency crafting.

How fossils work

• A resonator has 1–4 sockets. You socket that many fossils, then apply it to an item — it rerolls the item like a Chaos Orb, but with the fossils' biases applied.
• Each fossil does something specific. A few common ones:
  • Pristine — more/better life mods
  • Dense — more/better defence mods
  • Aberrant / Frigid / Scorched / Metallic / Aetheric — bias toward chaos/cold/fire/lightning/caster
  • Serrated / Jagged / Corroded — attack, physical, and utility biases
• Combining fossils stacks their biases and can block competing mods, dramatically raising your odds of the combination you want.

Why it's still a grind

Even with biased pools you rarely hit the perfect item on the first go. A 4-socket resonator craft can take dozens or hundreds of applications to land the tiers you want — and each one is: buy/insert fossils, socket, apply, Ctrl+C, read, repeat. That's the part worth automating.

Automating fossil crafting with Exiled Bench

The Fossil mode handles the full loop:

1. Calibrate your item slot (and inventory if batching).
2. Pick your fossils and resonator; set the target mods (with tiers) you're rolling for — plus filler and forbidden mods if you want to guard against bricks.
3. Press start. Exiled Bench runs the load → socket → apply → read sequence automatically, up to 4 fossils per resonator, and stops when your target combination appears.

Batch a whole tab

Rolling one base forever is often worse than buying a stack of cheap bases and fossil-rolling them all. Drop them in a tab, calibrate the grid, and run an inventory batch — the app rolls each item to target, marks it done, and moves on, with the same continue-until-all-done behaviour as grid rolling.

Tips

• Buy fossils in bulk if you're batching — the per-item cost drops and you're not stopping to restock.
• Block, don't just add. Some of the strongest fossil crafts are about the mods a fossil removes from the pool, not the ones it adds. Fewer competing mods = higher odds on the ones you want.
• Set tiers, not just names. Targeting T1 explicitly (see our tier-exact targeting) stops the app on a keepable roll, not the first low one.

Fossil crafting rewards knowing the biases — and once you do, letting the app grind the applications turns a tedious method into a background task. Compare it with the simpler Alt+Aug approach when you only need one hard mod.
